Recent revelations in a bribery probe that US Navy officials engaged in drunken debauchery and other foul acts while in the Philippines should raise alarm bells for the Philippine government. The US Navy officials were said to have engaged “a carousel of prostitutes” during wild parties and orgies while making port calls in the country.
US Navy Rear Admiral Bruce Loveless was said to have engaged in shenanigans at the EDSA Shangrila and Manila Hotel, throwing lavish parties all paid for by a Malaysian businessman who was bribing Loveless in exchange for service contracts and classified information.
President Rodrigo Duterte should now make true his promise to expel US troops from the Philippines. All the more he should stop the construction of US military facilities under the EDCA. All the more he should terminate the VFA and the annual port calls and Balikatan war games.
US troops are bad news for the Philippines. They have no qualms violating domestic laws. They routinely violate national sovereignty. They use our country as a staging ground for regional power projection. They intervene in our domestic affairs. We are their military and sex playground.
Duterte must act now and kick US troops out of the Philippines. It’s time for him to back words with deeds. ###
