The Bicol Region, greatly devastated by Supertyphoon Reming barely a year ago is once more battered by strong winds and heavy downpour and threatened by landslides, mudslides and floods.

Thousands of families with almost a million individuals which is about a quarter of the entire Bicol population are moving to safer grounds and shelter. Massive evacuations which started three days ago (November 21) are still ongoing. Also part of the affected are those persons stranded in ports in Tabaco City, Pilar and Matnog, Sorsogon.

With this great number of dislocated families, given the limited financial and logistical capacity of local government units, we expect the evacuees to crowd in evacuation centers; make do with rationed food and contamination-prone water sources and inadequate toilet facilities.

The present condition in the Bicol Region once again calls for our collective move for the immediate needs of the affected families of Typhoon Mina. From previous relief goods distribution of the BMDR, relief packs distributed to families consist of the following items:

FOOD rice, dried fish, mongo, milk, sugar, coffee, salt, canned food, cooking oil, bottled water NON-FOOD Sleeping mats, mosquito nets, blankets, laundry soap, kitchen utensils, water jug, water purifier, clothing

Past experiences tell us that government calamity funds barely suffice even for the immediate and short-term needs. Relief assistance is still most needed when evacuees return to their villages. The initial stages of rebuilding what is left of their homes and livelihood prove the most difficult. As such, there is no limited timeframe for BMDR relief goods distribution. It continues so long as donations and contributions are gathered. The very nature of the BMDR, a citizen-based organization of individuals in disaster-prone communities, makes this possible.

Relief distribution by and through the BMDR shall be conducted in the most appropriate time. Any contribution is most welcome and greatly appreciated. Thank you!
