!  Gloria not learning from failures of dictatorship
How much has Gloria learned from the experience of Martial Law?

Not much, if you ask cause-oriented groups who will be marching tomorrow along Ayala, Makati.

“There are so many parallels with the current administration and the past dictatorship. Both Arroyo and Marcos were guilty of electoral fraud. Both had their share of cronies and allegations of corruption. Both had unleashed different forms of repression. And like Marcos, Arroyo may also be deposed through people power,” said Bayan secretary general Renato M. Reyes, Jr.

“She is repeating many of the sins of Marcos. Recently she has allowed more United States intervention in our domestic affairs, much like what Marcos did when Martial Law got US backing,” he added.

The rally tomorrow will also be a reunion of sorts for Martial Law victims, Martial Law “babies” and the current generation of Gloriagate crusaders trying to oust Mrs. Arroyo. The reunion would span more than three decades of freedom-fighters.

“It would be great to see several generations of resistance and struggle coming together for this activity. Unlike the administration, the people have understood the implications of Martial Law. We continue to cry, ‘Never again!’” Reyes said.

Bayan believes that resorting to emergency rule or martial law would be the last nail on Arroyo’s coffin. “Freedom and civil liberties is an issue that can galvanize the entire nation against Mrs. Arroyo. If she does a Marcos, then she’s bound to share the same fate as the late dictator,” Reyes said.

Bayan and the Gloria Step Down! Movement will assemble at Rustan’s Ayala tomorrow before marching towards Paseo de Roxas cor Ayala for the main rally program that will be from 4-9pm.
